Which London Airport Is Best from Kent? A Town-by-Town Guide
Kent has no major passenger airport of its own, so most trips abroad start with a drive to London. Here's how the five London airports compare from each part of the county.
Kent has no major passenger airport of its own, so almost every trip abroad from the county starts with a journey to one of London's airports. Which one is best from Kent depends on two things: where you live in the county, and where you're flying. The cheapest flight isn't always the best choice once you factor in an extra hour on the M25 in each direction.
We drive these routes every day from all over East Kent. Here's how the airports compare, followed by journey times from each part of the county.
Gatwick: The Closest for Most of Kent
For most of Kent, Gatwick is the nearest and easiest airport. It sits south of London, so there's no need to cross the Thames or drive round the busiest stretch of the M25. From Ashford it's around an hour; from Thanet it's closer to an hour and three quarters. It has a huge range of European holiday routes and a growing number of long-haul flights, which makes it the default choice for many Kent travellers.
Heathrow: Worth the Extra Distance for Long-Haul
Heathrow is on the far side of London, so it's a longer journey from anywhere in Kent, usually two hours or more from the coast. The M25 between the M20 and the M4 is the stretch that decides how long it takes. For long-haul flights to North America, Asia and the Middle East it's often the only sensible option, and a direct flight from Heathrow usually beats a connection from somewhere closer.
Stansted and Luton: North of the Thames
Both are popular for low-cost European flights, but from Kent both mean crossing the Thames at Dartford, which brings a crossing charge and one of the most unpredictable stretches of road in the South East. Stansted is generally the quicker of the two. Luton is the furthest London airport from most of Kent. If the fare saving is small, Gatwick is usually the better trade.
London City and Southend
London City is small, quick to get through and close to Canary Wharf, which makes it a favourite for business trips to European cities. From much of Kent it's a similar distance to Gatwick. Southend, in Essex, has a small number of routes and can occasionally be worth a look, though it also involves the Dartford Crossing.
Journey Times from Each Part of Kent
These are typical door-to-terminal times in normal traffic.
Thanet (Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate): Gatwick 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours; Heathrow 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes; Stansted 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes. See our Thanet page.
Canterbury: Gatwick 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes; Heathrow 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes; Stansted 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. See our Canterbury page.
Whitstable and Herne Bay: Gatwick 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes; Heathrow 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes; Stansted 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes.
Dover and Deal: Gatwick 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours; Heathrow 2 hours to 2 hours 45 minutes. See our Dover page.
Folkestone and Hythe: Gatwick 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes; Heathrow 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. See our Folkestone page.
Ashford: Gatwick 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes; Heathrow 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes. See our Ashford page.
Three Questions to Help You Choose
How early is the flight? For a 6am departure, an extra 45 minutes of driving means an extra 45 minutes less sleep. The nearest airport often wins.
How much are you really saving? A cheaper fare from Luton can disappear once you add the longer transfer, the Dartford charge and the extra time.
What happens on the way home? After a long-haul flight, a shorter drive is worth a lot. If you're landing in the evening, Gatwick or City gets you home sooner.
Timing Your Journey Around the M25 and Dartford
Whichever airport you choose, the M25 is the part of the journey that decides how long it takes. The stretch between the M20 and M23 is usually manageable, which is another point in Gatwick's favour. Heading west to Heathrow, the section past the M3 and M4 junctions slows at peak times. For Stansted and Luton, the Dartford Crossing is the pinch point: the northbound tunnels can queue badly in the morning rush and on Friday afternoons.
The practical answer is to travel early or late where you can. A 4am collection for a 7am flight from Gatwick usually means clear roads all the way. A 3pm departure on a Friday in July does not. When you book with us, we plan the collection time around the day and the route, not just the distance.
Flying Long-Haul from Kent
For long-haul trips, the airport often chooses itself: the airline and route you want may only fly from Heathrow or Gatwick. In that case it's the return journey that deserves the most thought. Landing after an overnight flight, tired and with a lot of luggage, is when a two-hour drive home feels longest. Booking the return transfer at the same time as the outbound, with your flight tracked, means a driver waiting in arrivals and nothing left to organise.
